Kathryn M. Vannauker (b. 1914) of Hazleton, Pennsylvania, attended Hazleton Senior High School, the State Teachers' College in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, and Columbia University in New York, New York. She was employed as a high school Latin and English teacher at Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, before she joined the WAAC (Women's Army Auxiliary Corps.) Vannauker enlisted in the WAAC at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, in July, 1942. Following basic training at Fort Des Moines, Iowa, she was sent to Daytona Beach, Florida. In January, 1943 Vannauker was assigned with the first group of WAACs stationed at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia where she trained new WAAC recruits.
